Keeping The Ball Rolling
I haven’t posted much for a variety of reasons. I actually have several great drafts that were supposed to be posted last week, but I lost my internet service. I’m not too pleased with BT Broadband at the moment. I thought about posting them anyway, but they are all out of date and since blogging is a chronological affair, it doesn’t much work.
Mi Mujer’s parents came up and we had a great time with them. We went to the horse races, and I won on my first bet. I lost on all the others, but I still did better than everyone else.
I took them out to a sports pub to watch the NFL game from Wembley. It was interesting to see their reactions. Mi Mujer’s cousin liked the cheerleaders and wondered why they didn’t have them in their football. Maybe they’ll get them now. The part that made them laugh, and probably most of the pub as well, was when the players took the field amid fireworks. They thought that was completely over the top—and I have to agree—I’m just so used to seeing it that it didn’t even register for me.
Sadly for the NFL they had to compete with Arsenal v. Liverpool, rugby and a Real Madrid match. Most locals were watching their football and a surprising amount of Yanks were focused on ours. The game generated buzz, but I don’t think it will have any kind of staying power.
I celebrated my first Bonfire Night, which just involved having a beer and watching the occasional firework from our deck. It seems a bit of a strange holiday to me. Next week we leave to go visit my family in the States for Thanksgiving. That’s a holiday I understand very well: Family, (American) football, turkey, pie and cranberry orange bread. Really looking forward to it.
