Couple of Updates and ASA Allows Puppy Love

It’s been a while between posts but there are good reasons for it.

  • I was keeping a low profile and I have successfully remained one of the half dozen people in Britain not implicated by Mohamad al-Fayed in the death of Princess Diana. I really didn’t want the hassle of having to prove I’m not MI-6.
  • We had an earthquake! Really, they’re even calling it that. All across the country devastation was wrecked on countless, or at least double digit, teacups.  I myself had to straighten a picture the next morning.

There has been plenty of interesting events going on that I would have liked to post about, but work and other day-to-day issues have been keeping us busy. Busy is good though, especially with work - it’s a good indicator of job security.

Mad Men started over here last night so I was finally able to see what I’d been hearing so much about from the States. It looks like it will be a great show and I liked the use of real ad campaigns mixed in. It’s definitely sexed up but it does have a sense of agency realism, although the days of keeping a fifth in your desk and smoking in the lift are well past.

Moving on to current advertising issues, the Guardian had a story last week about a new Setanta advert that the ASA had received complaints about. For those who don’t know what the ASA is, it is like the FTC with jackboots and very little sense of humour. However the ASA has now decided that it’s okay to refer to a woman’s breasts as a “couple of puppies“. Hey, even a broken clock gets it right sometimes.

I’m hooked on Mad Men! The cigarettes and liquor aren’t the half of it. Wait until you hear that the typewriter was made so that even women could understand it.

That was nice of ASA.. freedom in advertising is always good..

It’s the age of enlightenment, Elle. It inspired me to design my blog easy enough for women to use too!

The rampant sexism in the show is fascinating and had Cris pretty near seething. Especially the end of the first show when we find that Donald had a wife and kids and his wife was surprised he came home rather than just staying in the city.

I thought it was cool that she left a plate in the oven for him! ;)
