20 January, 2009; A Truly Historic Day and Misunderestimating Crime
There seems to be a lot of coverage on the news about a job transition, sadly mine seems to be overlooked. George W. Bush and I have a few things in common; we both have the same middle initial and we both left our jobs on the same day. The differences are that nobody calls me Dubya and my approval ratings at work are higher. I have less in common with Obama, but we will both be starting new jobs.
I’m moving on and I’m quite excited to do so. I’m really looking forward to the new opportunity I have.
As a proper farewell I and my coworkers went to a pub for some drinks at lunch time. The pub is near a jewellery store which happened at that moment, 1pm on a Tuesday afternoon, to be raided. Three men wearing balaclavas and wielding sledge hammers broke the windows and gathered up some bling before taking off in a Mercedes. I wasn’t a direct witness as I was a block away but one told my Creative Director to “Get the fuck away” while swinging a hammer. Apparently he was quite convincing.
Marlow always seemed such a quaint little village in Buckinghamshire. I am happy to return to the safety of East London and looking forward to my new job.

Does this count as an “armed” robbery? If your creative director had happened to have a pick axe in his back pocket to swing in self defense, would that have been against the law? It’s certainly hard to fathom crime in the UK. Did anyone bother to get the license number?

I would have fought back. I mean it was only a hammer right? How fast could he really swing that. I would have dodged it just like the movies. Oh well at least everyone is safe. I hope you are able to do well at your new job!

@Terro: I’m not sure if you need a license to conceal a pick axe here. I suspect not since it probably isn’t something that is concealable.
While I do not wish to get into a 2nd amendment discussion at this time in the comments, I do suspect that an unarmed populace is a contributing factor to the brazen crimes here. And the Mercedes was undoubtedly stolen and soon to be torched so a plate number will unfortunately have little effect.
@Pennsylvania: I normally delete comments with keywords in the name field like you have done. However your name in combination with the advice given makes me chuckle so you get a free pass.

The whole story sounds fishy.
Don’t compare urself to Dubya.
When he drives down the road, people flip him the bird.
I doubt that happens to you.
Good Luck on the new job.

Lol @ Penn. Yeah, only a hammer. I doubt you would say that if you ever got hit by one.

Gosh! That must have been really scary for you! I live in the north of England, Yorkshire to be precise. Come and join us up here, we have much less crime

@El Yanqui,
Dude thats a remarkable date for you.
Just an additional:
Present president of Philippines take her oath during an EDSA 2 after the supreme court impeach the former president.
It was dated, January 20 2001. Same date of Obama’s oath taking.
Hope I added addition January 20 information here.

You were working in Marlow? You should have told me, I could have rocked up in the Screamin’ Eagle Tour Van and we could have lunched.

Wow! In broad daylight in all. Times must be getting tough.

@Lumpy: I thought you knew! You can always fire up the van and hit Covent Garden. We got some metal bars here…

The comparisons with the two Presidents and yourself were interesting. Hope you don’t have so many hurdles facing you in your new job as Obama currently is grappling with

all of a sudden body armour seems like a good idea when going to the pub .
am sure we are not quite there yet but if unchecked will end up there .
February 16th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
I don’t think I would have taken on a gang with hammers unless I felt like they intended to harm someone. Scary they would do this in broad daylight.

Close call, good luck with your new job. How’s London’s crime rate? I never thought of it as having a lot for such a large city.
February 19th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Ahhh the safety of East London. Gulp.
February 23rd, 2009 at 9:00 am
Safety and London in the same sentence, oh the irony
imo UK is a bit of a mess right now, crime rates are going to continue to climb because of the recession. More unemployment and poorer people = more crime.

Interesting story. I like Dubya so don’t be hate’n!
March 5th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Well, how do you like your new job? Think you’re enjoying it more than Obama is enjoying the task confronting him?
March 15th, 2009 at 9:00 am
hopefully your new job you’ll inherit less of a mess than Obama was left with by Bush.
